Kyou Kara Maoh
Kyou Kara Maoh, known in the U.S. under the mistranslated name of God Save Our King,
walks the very fine line between shonen-ai and mainstream anime.
I ignored this series
for the longest time, thinking that a show that uses its gay pairing
as comic relief could only serve to frustrate the true yaoi fangirl.
And boy does it frustrate. But it also leaves you rolling with
laughter, and sighing wistfully at the thought of how much better
the show would be if it stopped fence-sitting and crossed over to
the truly slashy side of the street. The canon male/male pairing,
Demon King Yuuri and his pathalogically jealous fiancee, Prince
Wolfram, is primarily played for laughs, and is rarely treated
seriously. Needless to say, this really pisses of diehard fans of
the pairing, of which am one. As the series progresses, we get to
see the maturing of the bratty prince, which serves to painfully underline the fact
that King Yuuri could stand to do some growing-up of his own. It's a pairing that
will frustrate the crap out of you, but you're a slave to it anyway. Sadly the only place
this relationship gets the serious treatment it deserves is in fanfiction.
